Aromatherapy, the use of aromatic essences in the form of pure essential oils, is gaining increasing popularity as an alternative way of tackling a wide range of ‘unhealthy’ problems, from skin disorders and depression, to arthritis and digestion.

This 3000 year old art form is finding acceptance in hospital environments and in many homes, although the true skill can only be learned over a period of years. It is the knowledge of the essential oils, i.e. their properties, combined with the amazing power of touch in the form of massage, that is resulting in relief from a range of ailments.

Essential oils have an amazing range of properties, being antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral, aphrodisiac, diuretic, sedative, stimulant, and so on. Most oils combine some of these properties.

Although the benefit of aromatherapy is optimized by doing hands-on work, other methods of application would be:

  • Inhalation: especially for chest, nasal passages and throat.
  • Compress: hot or cold, this can be a very effective topical application.
  • Vaporization: infusing the air in a home, office or shop, especially in a conditioned shopping mall.
  • Baths: 4 – 7 drops

A particular fascination is that good essential oils act on us at various levels. This can be physiological, psychological as well as spiritual.
